Directory Links - A Waste of Time

The title of this article says it all. Directory links are a waste of time. You are probably asking yourself, "Why is an owner of a Finance Directory saying directory links are a waste of time?". Seems counter productive, doesn't it.

Well, like many of you, I have spent endless hours and a lot of money getting my website links submitted to hundreds of directories. I have come to the sobering conclusion, I wasted my time and money for little or no return on my investment. This little return had me asking myself, "Why doesn't this work?".

First, let me give you this man's opinion on why directory submissions are a waste of time. My theory is simple and led me to develope my own Finance Directory.

The basic concept of most directories is, at its core, flawed. The intent is not to get your link spidered or properly noticed as intended. However, they are designed to give the webmaster easy control of the site. They look at the link, determine if it is appropriate for their site and category you want it in, click a button and the site is added. You must be wondering, why this is a flaw?

The flaw is not the coding or design of the site. The flaw is it makes it too easy for the webmaster of the directory to be lazy and be rewarded for it. That is a pretty bold statement, but I feel my wasted time and money gives me license to express this opinion.

Here is an example of a mistake commonly made by link directories.

Go to a directory you have recently or going to submit your link to. Check the meta tags on the main page and on the category page you are going to submit your link to. Chances are they are the same or even worse blank. Does the search engine or links directory spider think this is a duplicate page, if so, does it continue cataloging the page? I believe the answer is NO. It is one of the main reasons your website link never gets spidered or you never get credit for a backlink.

There are many more technical reasons why the majority of link directories do not work. Your time is valuable, so we can explore them at another time.

What to look for in a link directory

  1. The K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple stupid) method work best.
  2. Are the pages static? Meaning, is the page prebuilt or assemble when called upon. Click Here to read a good article comparing the two types of pages.
  3. Is each webpage individually optimized for search engine?
  4. Are your keyword in the meta tags?
  5. Do they allow anchor text or title to be one of your website keywords?

All of these factors were taken into account when Free Finance Hub was built. It may be more work for me to maintain, but I think your link is worth it.
